A note from Megan Forward...

This series of ‘wave’ sculptural assemblages began when I was commissioned to do a large-scale painting of a wave. This sent me on a journey of exploration into the shape and movement, the awesome forces of nature at play, the power and beauty of waves and the vastness of the ocean. I was particularly drawn to Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760-1849) ‘The Great Wave at Kanagawa’ painting. I also wanted to connect these themes back to our location on Australia’s east coast. The beautiful blue, grey, green and brown colours of bay and shorelines, and the mangroves that grow around the perimeters and are so vital for providing habitats for new life into the eco system. I have tried to incorporate and blend all of these.

I’m thrilled by the wild, untameable ocean. I love the ability of the sea to calm, awe and scare me. Exploring this realm with sculpture and watercolour is a convergence of art practices for me. Just as every wave is different to the one before, each of these sculptures is a one-of-a-kind, unique response.
